Communication Tools

Bulletin boards and forums will instantly set you up with a page that you can use there and then. Type in your notes, move them around, link to images and so on. Share it with friends and let them collaborate as well. It's very basic in comparison with some other resources that are out there, but it's quick and simple, and that's always a good thing.

Lefora looks rather interesting. They'll create and host your bulletin board/forum for you. You can custom it, they'll catch spam, you can moderate however you wish, nothing to download - create newsletters, use widgets - looks very impressive.

micromobs Real time messaging for your groups. This is a group messaging service and is the easiest way to manage and communicate with multiple groups. micromobs presents your group messages as a stream of content which means you can chose which messages to respond to and which messages to skim over or ignore. This means your group messages will no longer clutter your inbox, and you wont need to go to different websites to interact with your various social groups. It's kind of a group FriendFeed from what I can tell.

ProBoards Free Remotely Hosted Message Boards. This looks to be of interest if you want to run a bulletin board but don't want to have to do it yourself.

QuickTopic: free message board hosting (bulletin boards). Set up a page for yourself or your website.

Qhub A simple way to create a Q&A website. This is a system to allow anybody to build a Q&A website in minutes. Simply choose a Qhub name and address to build your very own Q&A site.

Shapado is a Q&A software and is a hosting service that allows anyone to create his own Q&A site for free in less than 8 seconds.

Chat boxes

BlahTherapy. This is one of a few similar resources. You log on, either as a listener or as a ventor, and then you just... chat with some random stranger. The idea according to their site is "Talking about your problems can help you to spot things that are causing problems in your life. A person with a different perspective on your situation can help you decide how to fix the problems you are having, and how to deal with the things you can’t fix" What itmeans in practice is that the first 3 people that you talk to want to discuss the short comings of their sex lives. Very dull indeed. I see no point to it at all.

Bold Chat. Commercial, corporate product.

Bravenet Free Live Chat Service. Another from the Bravenet stable.

Campfire Now Business chat, file sharing, group decision making: Good for group chatting, simple file sharing, sharing images and code.

Cbox. Freebie, but with premium functionality.

Chatcat for adding real time chat to your website.

Chatterous - group chat using the web, IM, email or phone. Use existing communication tools, no registration required, multiple platforms.

ChatWING is real time, lightweight and free.

Chatzy - Start Quick Chat. Good alternative to traditional chat sites. No registration, free, no popup ads, no installation, any pc and through corporate firewalls.

Live Person. Commercial, corporate product.

Neat Chat! is the easiest and fastest way to have an online conversation with a group of friends or colleagues. No signups or software installs are required. You simply use a web browser to communicate via Neat Chat. What is so appealing about Neat Chat? The process of starting a chat session and inviting people is dead easy! To start a chat session, all you need to do is go to their homepage, enter your nickname, and click the Start Group button. Once you do that, your chat session is started, and your browser loads the session's chat room. You then invite people by sending them the URL of the chat room. When your invitees access the URL, they enter the chat room to chat with you. It is as simple as that!

Nurph. Real-Time Chat on Your Website.. Well, this is simple enough. Nurph (no idea where that comes from) a url from the site or a bookmark, get it to load up at their site, and it automatically adds in a chat box. You could use this with colleagues or students to take them around a site and to chat about it - you login into chat via Twitter. Looks very nice, straightforward and simple to use.

Omegle doesn't have the 'therapy' pretensions of BlahTherapy - it's just a random chat room with either text or video. All my conversations started with the other random person asking 'asl?' short for age, sex, location and an answer of anything other than 'young blonde teen girl gagging for it' means you get cut off immediately while the sad man goes to find someone else (probably another equally sad man) to uh... discuss fantasies with.

Simple Meet Me get a code to start a room, or use a code to enter one.

TALKI The easiest way to embed a forum. Unlimited posting, Unlimited members, 15 recent topics 5 forums, API access. Pop it onto your site with a single line of code. Looks nice.

Tawea is Facebook chat for websites.

Talky is truly simple video chat and screen sharing for small groups. - Create a free chatroom The TinyChat resource works very quickly and easily - it will create a room for you and you can just dive in. It also works in conjunction with Twitter, and invites you to use your Twitter name. However, the downside is that if you use your Twitter name it takes control of your account and posts a message on your behalf to say you're chatting, which I think is really out of order. There are also no admin controls, so if someone unsavoury should manage to get in there's little to be done about it, short of leaving and creating a new room.

Network creation A lot of us have multiple online profiles scattered across various services, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr, and Twitter. And one problem we face is pulling all of this information together to build a single on-line identity — be it for personal use, or to create a professional on-line profile."Our focus is simple, enable you to:1) create a personal, dynamic profile page (think splash page) that points users to your content around the web (versus depending on Google search); and 2) understand how many people see your profile, where they're coming from, and what they do on your page."
